Seven newcomers run for Legislature

LINCOLN — A farmer, a professor, an economic developer and a produce manager are among seven newly declared candidates for the Legislature.

The five Republicans and two Democrats are seeking the officially nonpartisan office.

They bring the number of declared legislative candidates to 25 in 22 districts. All seven are seeking seats in which incumbents are barred by term limits from running again. The seven:

  • Kurt Geschwender, 58, is seeking the District 13 seat representing northeast Omaha. That seat is held by State Sen. Lowen Kruse. Geschwender is a Realtor who lives in the Ponca Hills area. A Republican, he considered running for U.S. Senate in 1994 but decided against it.
  • Beau McCoy, 26, has filed to run for the District 39 seat now held by Sen. Dwite Pedersen of Omaha. The district includes west Omaha and the Elkhorn area, as well as parts of Douglas, Sarpy and Washington Counties. McCoy lives near 192nd Street and West Center Road. He is a sales manager with Husker Siding and Windows and national committeeman for the Nebraska Federation of Young Republicans.
  • Doug Garwood, 64, is one of two candidates for the District 17 seat representing Dakota, Dixon and Wayne Counties. Garwood, of South Sioux City, raises corn, soybeans and hydroponic tomatoes. He is a founder and secretary of Siouxland Ethanol and a registered Republican.
  • Bob Giese, 52, also is seeking the District 17 seat, which now is held by Sen. Pat Engel of South Sioux City. Giese is mayor of South Sioux City and a former city councilman. He is produce manager at Hy-Vee and a registered Democrat.

Barrett teaches leadership in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication. He is a registered Democrat.
  • Gregg Neuhaus, 54, is the first announced candidate in Grand Island's District 35. Sen. Ray Aguilar now represents the district. Neuhaus is an attorney and a registered Republican. This is his first bid for elected office.
